EPDM Rubber Roof
Why Choose An EPDM, Rubber Flat Roof?
Almost all homes in the UK have a flat roof, and what started out as a cost effective idea has now turned into a money pit for many homeowners; where constant repairs and expenditure has cost homeowners dear. Felt roofing is the most popular, traditionally used material, despite the short lifespan and susceptibility to the elements. However, now there is a solution to a lifetime peace of mind – EPDM, or to give it its full name – Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer.
EPDM has been used on industrial flat roofs for over 40 years and is becoming incredibly popular on the domestic market now, too. There are examples of EPDM which are over 60 years old that are still functioning exactly as they did when installed. The first examples installed haven’t shown any signs of deterioration and as EPDM is impervious to the elements, it makes it the premier choice for flat roofing. It has a natural look of dark grey in appearance. A smooth and durable finish ensures no need for ballast or chippings, which block guttering.
EPDM is currently protecting roofs for companies such as, Honda, Ford, McDonalds, Esso, Centre Parcs, Jaguar, Peugeot, Tag-Mclaren, Marks & Spencer, Toyota, Disneyland Paris, Coca-Cola as well as a host of other commercial enterprises.

Is EPDM Expensive?
No, despite its considerable technical advantages it compares favourably with other quality roofing systems, not least when you factor in the other materials required for different types of roofing solutions. Plus due to its longevity it will work out far cheaper over time.
Can I Walk On It?
Yes, EPDM rubber is designed for maintenance access. For heavy usage such as roof patio areas it can be overlaid with a variety of durable finishes such as paving slabs, timber/plastic decking etc.
Is It Environmentally Friendly?
Yes, EPDM is an inert material with very limited environmental impact during both manufacture and installation of the product. Plus, its lifespan means that any small impact is negated over time.
Secondly, as Household Home Improvement’s has always recommended “Warm Roof”. Any living area where EPDM is being installed, (i.e. above extensions, dorma’s etc.) there is insulation added beneath, with a minimum depth of 100mm. This greatly improves the thermal efficiency of the flat roof.
Does It Require Any Maintenance?
No. EPDM does not require any systematic maintenance whatsoever, though you may wish to clean it if your roof is on display so as to keep it looking its best!
Household’s flat roofs ensure that all moisture is repelled and that moss growth is not supported.
EPDM has a flexibility of 300%, allowing the system to accommodate any building movement.
The system breathes to allow vapours to escape.
Why Don’t More People Use EPDM?
You’d be surprised at just how many people in the UK already have realised the enormous benefits of EPDM – you just won’t hear about it because it causes them no bother, and once it’s up, it’s up for a lifetime!
To date, more than 1 BILLION square metres of EPDM have been installed worldwide!
